Southwest Yorkson Stormwater Detention System
2015-2018 | Langley, BC
McElhanney was retained by Qualico Developments (Vancouver) Inc. to create a 21,200m3 stormwater detention system for the Township of Langley. Due to land constraints, McElhanney proposed a non-traditional solution where the stormwater detention system was installed as tanks below sports fields.
This is the first facility of its kind in Langley and one of the largest underground stormwater detention systems in North America. The facility is sustainable and cost efficient as it combines two facilities into one. The land used for the facility is underneath two sports fields – usable space for the Township and community. The system includes storm sewers, detention tanks, and flow diversion manholes to redirect sediment and debris during heavy rainfall. McElhanney drew on experience in stormwater detention to develop an innovative solution to achieve the same benefits of conventional stormwater detention with substantial cost savings for Qualico and for the Township.
In 2019, the project received an Award of Excellence from the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies – British Columbia.
