Stoney Trail Network and Crossings Review
2020-2021 | Calgary, AB
During Phase 1 of this project, a network planning study was conducted to recommend the location(s) of future east-west flyovers over the Calgary Ring Road (Stoney Trail). With continued growth in and adjacent to northeast Calgary, additional travel corridors across Stoney Trail needed to be identified and planned in order to provide connectivity to new residential and commercial communities east of Stoney Trail.
A flyover at 80 Avenue N.E. was a necessity in order to meet minimum emergency response times to areas east of Stoney Trail. This study investigated whether that crossing should accommodate public vehicular traffic in addition to emergency vehicles, transit, and active modes. The results of the network analysis, which included the review of multiple evaluation criteria, concluded that the 80 Avenue N.E. flyover should not accommodate public vehicular traffic. Instead, a future all-modes crossing should be constructed at 64 Avenue N.E. to accommodate this traffic as well as provide an additional crossing for active modes, emergency services and transit.
Phase 2 of the study involved the detailed design and tender preparation for the construction of the 80 Avenue N.E. flyover. Phase 3 (Construction Management and Administration) commenced in Spring 2022.
