Apex Waste Transfer Station
2016 – 20 | Apex Mountain Resort, BC
Apex Mountain Resort’s solid waste management system previously consisted of a limited amount of garbage collection and was performed on a subscription basis by private operators. As the local municipality, the Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen, wanted a solid waste transfer station constructed which would allow garbage to be dropped off / collected and shipped to the regional landfill, as well as provide a spot where recycling could be collected.
McElhanney provided topographic surveys & legal surveys as well as civil, structural, and electrical design for the project. The result was a solution that fit within the available area and met the waste management requirements identified by the environmental engineering team.
However, the project was not without challenges. Specifically, the mountainous site environment posed challenges because the transfer station had to fit between surrounding creeks and the site’s susceptibility to snow meant that the structural design had to accommodate heavy snow loads. The existing electrical power on the site was also inadequate and required tenure research for a new overhead route, a Crown Application, and a right-of-way survey.
McElhanney provided:
- Topographic survey & construction surveys
- Legal surveys – Crown application drawings and right-of-way survey
- Civil, structural, and electrical engineering design
- Construction cost estimating
- Project management
- Tendering support and award recommendation
- Construction inspections
- Construction contract administration
- Record drawings and warranty inspection
