Prince George: Get to Know The Team

McElhanney Prince George Team

Have you ever wondered what it was like to like and work in northern British Columbia? We spoke with some of our Prince George staff to learn more about the work this northern branch does and how staff are giving back to the local community.

Known as the “Northern Capital” of BC, Prince George is the largest city in the region and is just one of the communities across Western Canada McElhanney employees call home. Staff in our Prince George branch enjoy year-round outdoor, sporting, and cultural activities, and recognize the City as a hub of active living.

Strategic Vision – Our Prince George branch aspires to be the employer of choice and preferred consultant for the markets in which they compete.

Key Services:

  • Municipal engineering (water/wastewater, subdivision planning, etc.)
  • Transportation engineering
  • Environmental services
  • Geotechnical engineering and materials testing
  • Electrical engineering
  • Building structural engineering
  • Engineering survey
  • Legal survey

Recent ProjectsSome of the Prince George branch’s recent and notable projects include:

  • Legal Survey and Construction Components for Downtown Prince George – Our local branch is currently working with the City of Prince George to provide field survey and statutory plan preparation for new parcels of development in the city’s downtown area. Originally surveyed in the early 1900s, many new development sites downtown require updated survey data. Our team re-established the exterior of the development parcel with survey posts and has begun field surveys of the construction site for elements such the construction of an underground parkade with a four phase condo development on top. • Water Management for the Salmon River Dam Decommissioning – In 2017, our Prince George branch’s expertise contributed to delivering water management for the Salmon River Dam Decommissioning, outside of the region, on Vancouver Island. McElhanney was retained by Kwikw contracting group to provide design and engineering services for two river bypass channels around the deconstruction site so that the dam could be safely and quickly dismantled “in the dry”. This project earned the 2018 Water Management Award of Excellence from the Canadian Water Resources Association. To read more about this project, please click here.

Community InvolvementOur branch is proud to support our local community where we work, live, and play. Most recently, branch staff participated in the 2018 Climb for Cancer Prince George event. The Climb invites the community to climb the iconic Prince George Cutbanks; often compared to Vancouver’s Grouse Grind. The Climb fundraises to support the local Kordyban Lodge which is a treatment center haven for patients in Northern BC. This year, the Climb raised over $55,000.

Despite the blustery weather, 23 McElhanney staff and family members participated in the Climb under the name “McClimbers”. In addition to being the “official high-five station” sponsor, our team raised $1175.

Staff Moments – Prince George is a great location to work, live, and play. But, don’t just take our word for it; hear what some of our staff have to say:

“Working in the Prince George McElhanney office has given me an excellent opportunity to learn new things in a supportive team environment and living here allows easy access to outdoor activities like mountain biking, hiking trails, and downhill skiing while still having many city amenities”

  • Melissa Chappell, Geotechnical Engineer

“Working for McElhanney in Prince George provides the opportunity to work on everything from small community projects to larger industry initiatives and allows you to control and accelerate your career at your own pace. The team here is an experience and diverse group which allows you to expand your knowledge base with ease.”

  • Robert Teetaert, Civil Technologist

“I was born and raised in Prince George and have always been interested in shaping the future of my community. The people at McElhanney have helped me grow and learn since the day I stepped in the door. I’ve had the benefit of working with some of the best people in the business and have gained invaluable experience along the way. My favourite part about working in the North is being so close to remote areas that showcase our Province’s beauty. In my free time I love hiking, camping, biking, canoeing, rock climbing, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and snowboarding; all of which are just minutes away.”
