At this year’s Association of Consulting Engineering Companies (ACEC) Awards Gala, McElhanney was awarded the “Award of Excellence for Engineering” in the Special Projects category, along with the prestigious Schreyer Award for our Trans-Canada Highway Avalanche Mitigation project we have worked on for Parks Canada Agency.
The Schreyer award is the industry’s highest national honour – it is awarded to a project that best represents exceptional technical expertise, innovation, and overall engineering excellence by an ACEC member firm. The jurors chose our project over others because they viewed it as “outstanding and world-leading” as well as “an unprecedented, leading-edge system that stood out for its technical complexity and innovation.”
Our project (2015-2021) is a truly unique one, offering first of their kind avalanche control solutions in North America.
Taking place in the Rogers Pass stretch of Glacier National Park in British Columbia, the project area is home to a unique 43.8km transportation corridor containing the Trans-Canada Highway, Canadian Pacific Railway, and a concentrated cluster of 135 high-frequency avalanche paths. Parks Canada Agency engaged McElhanney to improve the corridor’s safety and reliability by implementing industry-leading avalanche mitigation solutions. Our innovative solutions, integrated with the complex existing avalanche control program, significantly reduced the avalanche risk to roadway users and the Canadian Pacific Railway, and helps keep Canadians safely moving year-round.
